Ethel Key Simmons, a beloved mother, grandmother, and devoted member of her community, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, in Augusta, Georgia. Born on May 10, 1935, in Jackson, South Carolina, to the late Arthur Lee Key and Elizabeth Thomas, Ethel was a remarkable woman whose life's journey was marked by both resilience and compassion.
Ethel dedicated many years of her career to working at Rental Uniform Services as a presser. Her strong work ethic and commitment remain a testament to her character, even when illness curtailed her professional endeavors. However, it was her unwavering spirit and dedication to her family and faith that truly defined her.
A lifelong member of St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church, Ethel joined the congregation at a young age under the esteemed leadership of the late Reverend Riley. Over the years, she became one of the oldest and cherished members of the church, embodying the love and strength that the community venerates. Her faith was a guiding light, and she touched the lives of many through her involvement and kindness.
Ethel's legacy is reflected in her loving family. She leaves behind her cherished children: Josie Tolbert, Ethel (James) Turner, Laura M. Simmons, Loretta D. Simmons, Frank H. Simmons, Jr., Robert F. Simmons, and Joseph F. Simmons. The warmth of Ethel's love extends to her twenty-five grandchildren and a host of great and great-great-grandchildren who are grateful for the wisdom and joy she imparted to their lives.
Ethel was predeceased by a number of loved ones who remain forever in the hearts of her family and friends. Among them is her devoted husband, Frank H. Simmons, Sr., and her beloved daughters, Gloria A. Perkins and Jessie Key Jefferson and a host of siblings: Raymond Robinson, Fred Key, Sr., Hurbert Key, Mary E. Tolbert, Katherine Brown, Hattie M. Johnson, and Katie Johnson, as well as four grandchildren, John Brigham, Jr., Derrick Perkins, Le'Shanna Perkins, and Jermaine Simmons. They were all integral to her life, and she cherished her memories with each of them.
As we remember Ethel Key Simmons, we celebrate her life, her unwavering faith, and her profound love for family and community. She leaves behind an indelible mark on all who knew her, a legacy of love that will continue to inspire generations. Ethel will be deeply missed yet lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
Visitation will be held at C.A. Reid Sr. Memorial Funeral Home in Augusta, Georgia, on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM. The funeral service will take place at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Aiken, South Carolina, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, commencing at 11:00 AM. Ethel will be laid to rest at Walker Memorial Park following the service.
