George Alfred Childs, Sr.

1939 — 2025

Atlanta, Georgia

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of George Childs, who departed this life on November 6, 2025. He wasblessed with 86 years on this Earth.

George Childs, Sr., is survived by his cherished family members. He leaves behind his son, George A. Childs Jr., and his wife, Marjorie. He is also fondly remembered by his two chosen daughters, Shirley Holston and Gabriella Brown. His legacy continues through his four grandchildren: Tabriceia Nealy Yochum (Jeremy), George E. Childs, Basil A. Childs, and Thyme J. Childs. Additionally, he is proud to be great-grandfather to Oliver O. Crump and David Yochum.

George was preceded in death by two beloved daughters, Layvonne Nealy and Tammy Kidd. He was also preceded by his parents, Otto Chiles, Sr., and Ruthie Mae Chiles, and his siblings: Betty Lee Chiles, Otto Chiles Jr., Lester (LC) Charles Chiles, Eugene Wesley Chiles, Louie Edward Chiles, Willie Hugh Chiles, Beulah Faye Chiles, and Mayme Nell Chiles.

His family and loved ones remember him fondly, cherishing his memory and the love he shared with them all.

George was the youngest boy of nine children born to Otto and Ruthie in Lancaster, Texas. Being the eighth child, he grew up surrounded by family, and he loved sharing stories about his childhood and growing up in Lancaster. As a young boy, he attended St. Paul Freewill Baptist Church, which was an essential part of his early life.

He had a deep love for fishing — he enjoyed it in every form, whether it was relaxing by a lake or river. He was also a big football fan and always cheered on the Dallas Cowboys, often gathering with friends to watch the games. He had a special fondness for Atlanta, which he admired for its spirit.

He spent his working years at General Motors, where he was dedicated and hardworking as an autoworker. After retiring, he found joy in his new role as a package and moving specialist. He often helped friends and neighbors with their moves — he hardly charged a dime and truly loved lending a hand. Helping others was second nature to him.

George treasured his friendships, especially with James Holloway and Charles Sanders, both of whom meant a lot to him. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family—his nieces and nephews, especially his daughter, Vonda. They loved going to the movies together, sharing laughs and making memories.

He was a proud grandpa and great-grandpa, always talking about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had big hopes and dreams for their futures, imagining all the wonderful things they would accomplish. George’s kindness, love of family, and generous spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
