1951 WILLIAM DUNBAR 2026

William Elliott Dunbar

1951 — 2026

Jackson, South Carolina

Mr. William Elliott Dunbar, known as "Dunk," passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026. Born in Aiken, South Carolina, William was the son of the late Edward Coneser and Martha Elizabeth (Williams) Dunbar.

William grew up in Aiken, SC, and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, and later moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with his siblings but later relocated to Jackson, SC .

William attended Martha Schofield High School, where he ran track and performed in the school marching band. William, along with his “twin,” would put on a standing ovation performance for the crowd. He could outrun everyone on the track field. He would purposely sit on the field, allowing his opponent to gain an advantage, only to sprint ahead with that infectious grin, laughing all the way to the finish line. William also had a passion for tennis, and competed at Smith-Hazel Recreation Center, also playing Doubles alongside his twin brother.

William loved his music and had all the Oldies Greatest Hits. Oh Lord, he loved the Ohio Players, Sly and the Family Stone. He thought he was “Shaft” and knew how to set the atmosphere. He also was a one-of-a-kind mechanic, known as the "neighborhood mechanic". Not only could he repair it, he could completely disassemble and rebuild it better than the manufacturer.

Mr. Dunbar was preceded in death by his identical twin, John Wayne Dunbar, Edward Cleveland Dunbar, his only sister, Edwena Lorraine (Dunbar) Crowe ,a daughter, Minty Picola Dunbar, and granddaughter, Shawnta Victoria Lewis, and two close friends, Lubertha Toole and Kim Scales.

He is survived by his daughter, Vickey Toole Lewis, Martha Dunbar Richard (Derrick) . His wife, Shelia Mae Dunbar, and children, William Jr., Ebony, Jeremy, and his youngest son, Joseph Scales (Oak Ridge, Tennessee). William had 9 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Until the day of his transition, if you called his phone. The message simply said…..”Who you wanna talk to”!

I guess he received that call from Heaven.
